It’s great to donate time and money to an important cause, but we want more than that – we want each and every person to LIVE it in their daily lives as well. Not only do we want to help those with diabetes lead better lives, but we want to prevent diabetes in the first place; and scientists believe that the way to do that is through a healthy diet and exercise – something we can help you with. We are passionate about helping people lead healthier lives. We design our programs to fit into your busy schedule, and try to squeeze the maximum benefit into each class that we offer.
More than 9 million Canadians are living with diabetes and prediabetes. It is a disease that can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, nerve damage, and impotence. Risk factors include being overweight, over the age of 40, having an immediate family member with diabetes, and high blood pressure – just to name a few.
Though reading stats can give a good idea of how widespread the problem really is, sometimes it also makes it very impersonal. Which is why it is important not to forget that diabetes can be found right in your backyard. Chances are, you already know someone whose life has been touched by diabetes. Michelle Ricketts, Storm Fitness Owner, has. “Having an extended family with many diabetics, I have always felt a strong personal tie to this cause,” she says. After being introduced to Rebecca Taylor, the Pacific Area Coordinator for Team Diabetes in 2009, Michelle realized that Storm Fitness could really make a difference to the cause by both raising funds and helping people get active.
We want to make the cause personal. Not by getting to know those who have Diabetes (though that certainly does help), but rather by getting everyone involved in preventative healthy living. At the end of the day, we want to be able to say that it was a job well done because one more person is less likely to be diagnosed with Diabetes today.
And for those who have already been diagnosed, we can all give a little something back to them, too. $50 from each Fit Camp package sold will help support Team Diabetes, which raises funds for the provision of education and services, while advocating for our cause and breaking ground toward a cure.
